Musings of a code junkie

Back from Hiatus

Tagged

Hey! Yes, it’s me again, back from hiatus!

I’ve been quite busy since my last blog post, so I’ll take this chance to fill you in on what’s going on in my life.

Vacation

Vaaacaaatiiiooon… yep, I took some well deserved days off from the Internet and everything else. I went to Serra da Estrela with my lovely girlfriend for 4 days and did some snowboarding! Freakin’ AWESOME!

It was my first time coming in contact with snow, so it was pretty interesting, and wet! Nonetheless, I enjoyed it very much. We were really lucky because the weather was really great! The sun was shining, the birds were singing… wait… I think that might’ve been me.

Anyway, did I mention that snowboarding was awesome?! Sure, I fell a lot, didn’t have any classes, but it rocked! Once you get the hang of it and your butt is numb, it’s great fun. So, if you’ve never snowboarded, I wholeheartedly recommend you try it out!

Thesis

Yep, it’s almost April and it is almost time to choose my master thesis that I’ll be devoting the whole of next year to. That means I’ve been scrambling around, meeting with teachers that I like and that are working in the areas that I enjoy.

It’s really tough… there are so many cool things to do… yet so little time. On top of it I can only choose one! Bummer. But I’ve managed to reduce my choices from the 7 teachers I talked to, down to 2. I won’t say anything more because I’m still a little bit uncertain, but when I get more information you’ll be the first to know (more like the third or fourth, but hey, who’s counting right?). Just need to sleep on it for a bit longer and do a bit more research.

Classes

My second semester of my first year for my masters has already begun; last week actually. Taking 5 subjects as usual, and all of them are going to be really interesting. For those of you who don’t know, I use the word interesting interchangeably with hard!

Where’s the fun if it isn’t a challenge? If it doesn’t give you a headache? If it doesn’t make you want to pull out your hair sometimes and bang your head on the desk? If it doesn’t make you feel great when you actually finish it, as if you had just climbed Mount Everest? In my book that’s lekker fun!

Anyway, the subjects I’m taking are:

  • Programação Avançada / Advanced Programming
  • Plataforma para Aplicações Distribuidas na Internet / Platform for Distributed Applications over the Internet
  • Computação Móvel / Mobile Computing
  • Ambientes Virtuais de Execução / Virtual Execution Environments
  • Portfolio Pessoal / Personal Portfolio (where the main objective is to develop our soft skills; for this I’m doing an internship over at Network Concept)

Well, this blog post has already gotten too long. If you’ve made it up to here, I salute you! I’ll then blog more about the interesting subjects I’m taking and the cool projects I’ll be working on this semester, amongst other things.

Until then, happy programming!
